My name is Abigail Behrens and I am a senior in the Advanced Art Major at the Academy for the Arts, Science, and Technology. I have taken painting classes since the age of eight and have loved art ever since. Realism has always been the style I resonate with the most. However, my personal style incorporates more color than the traditional realistic methods. I like to manipulate colors to create more depth and emotion in my pieces.
Every senior is required to present a “Senior Mastery” at the end of our senior year, which is a project based on a body of twenty four cohesive works. We are required to have twelve breadth works which are pieces we use to explore different mediums, and twelve concentration works which focus on a more concise art principle or style. Because of my love of colors, along with my interest in portraits and landscapes, I decided to title my mastery, “The Exploration of Color Theory Through Landscapes and Portraiture.” Through this mastery, I will use my knowledge and understanding of how color works to create artwork that gives audiences a glimpse into my personal experiences and emotions. I hope that people will look at my works and reminisce while relating them to their own lives. For me, art is a way for me to release my feelings onto a canvas. It is my outlet. It also has given me the ability to appreciate each moment and see it in a different way than others might. Where one person may see a casual sunset, I see the ability to create something beautiful. I have always been taught that artwork is so much stronger when it depicts personal events or moments that mean a lot to the artist. I firmly believe this, because I find my work to be much more appealing when I have poured my heart and soul into it, instead of just going for the aesthetic appeal. I am extremely thankful for my experience at the Academy for Arts, Science, and Technology for giving me the opportunities to participate in various art shows such as Artfields Junior in Lake City, SC, the South Carolina State Fair, and the Annual Juried High School Art Exhibition at the Burroughs and Chapin Art Museum. At this school, I have all the materials and resources I could possibly imagine available to me at any given moment. The past three years in this art room have given me endless possibilities and I am so grateful to have had this opportunity to study what I love in such an amazing environment. I hope to finish my senior year out strong, and give back to the school that has given me so much. |
