Innocent Dreamland, 201944” x 20”, acrylicThis piece is one of the most meaningful pieces I have ever created. Each aspect of the work means something special to me. The two birds and the little girl represent my grandparents who are watching over me. The butterflies represent their free spirits. I aimed to make this piece a fantastical landscape, emphasizing innocence and childlike memories.

Bloom, 201824” x 30”, OilWhen I first came across this picture of my friend, Olivia Gano, I absolutely fell in love with it. I immediately thought it could work really well as an exploration of complimentary colors. I enhanced the colors in the picture so that the red in her face really stood out against the green of the background. Overall, I am really pleased with my use of color in both the face and the hair. Also, this was my first time painting a blurred out background and I am happy with how it came out.

Only Up From Here, 201820”x 20”, acrylicThis piece was created to really delve into New Mexican imagery and landscapes. I wanted to capture the bright horizon and breathtaking mountains. Also, I wanted to explore how to embed silhouettes into the sun rays. By juxtaposing cool and warm colors together, the sky really pops and shines reflections onto the mountains, which is exactly what I was going for.

Beaming Balloons, 201818” x 24”, oilThis piece was created during one of the most emotional times in my life. I started it with the intention of giving it to my grandma for Christmas. Soon after I started, however, my grandma became very ill and was in the hospital for weeks. Fortunately, she did get better in time for the Christmas holiday, but that was only temporary. I gave her the painting for Christmas, much to her delight, but the day after, she suffered from a severe stroke which eventually led to her passing away. Normally my focus for paintings has to do with the laws and principles of art such as color, depth, and emotion. However, because of the time crunch with this piece, as well as the subject matter, my focus was mainly to emphasize my grandfather’s happy face and make sure he was recognizable to my family. After looking at the finished product, my use of color is pleasing to me, which is why I chose it to be a concentration work.
